How many hours a day do you spend in your kitchen? A survey conducted recently tells us that the average American spends over 1000 hours a year in the kitchen–that’s almost three hours a day!
We’ve all heard that the kitchen is the heart of the home, so maybe that’s why we are hanging out there. I know for me, I do much more than cook in the kitchen. It’s the place all of our electronics are plugged in, so I end up leaning against the counter doing all the things on my phone- paying bills, scrolling socials, or texting. There are always dishes to do, but I would much rather be making the mess! And my family would too- they love it when I cook- even though there is mumbling and groaning at all the dirty dishes.
The kitchen is where the counter is that catches all the papers, bills, receipts, and magazines that come in from work, school, and the mail. It can get pretty piled up sometimes!
Over the years, I have had some great helpers in the kitchen. With my girls now a bit older, the 16-year-old can pretty much pick up any recipe and make it happen. My 12-year-old is pretty awesome at following recipes as well and is currently specializing in banana and zucchini bread, which gets no complaints from us! My littlest cook enjoys helping me measure and dump and is quite the companion, which I love. Even my husband is pretty handy with a knife and chopping is something he participates in on the regular.
Whatever the reason we spend time in the kitchen, I am a fan of togetherness–no matter where that is. The yummy food that comes as a result of togetherness in the kitchen is pretty great!
