In “Sunday’s Comin’,” Zach Williams uses the imagery of Jesus’ victory by conquering the cross and rising from the grave to remind you and I of the victory of Jesus in our everyday lives. “Friday” refers to Good Friday, the day that seemed the darkest because Jesus, the promised Savior had been killed. But God had a plan all along. Three days later was Resurrection Sunday–the day Jesus rose from the dead, fulfilling the plan of God to make a way for everyone who would believe in Him to be saved from their sins and become a friend of God. That same victorious Savior can help you in whatever need or trial you’re facing today.
Just this week I’ve heard stories from friends and acquaintances about health scares, financial challenges, difficult relationships, big decisions that need to be made. I’ve even been praying for God to work in some situations in my life and in the lives of people I care about, and I’ve been eagerly waiting for breakthrough.
When I think of all that and the lyrics of this song, it reminds me of the words of encouragement Jesus gave His disciples in John 14-17 right before He went to the cross. In these chapters we’re reminded that Jesus has not only conquered our sin and secured our eternal life with Him, He has conquered the daily trials and sorrows we face in this world. Jesus tells His followers that in this world we will have many trials and sorrows, but we can take heart because He has overcome the world (John 16:33). He gives us peace of mind and heart so we don’t have to be troubled or afraid (John 14:27). He is always with us, comforting us and guiding us through His Holy Spirit (John 14:16-18).
Let these lyrics and these verses encourage you today! It might feel like Friday now, but keep holding on. Sunday’s coming.
Keep on holdin’ on
There’s gonna be a breakthrough Keep on holdin’ on Don’t stay buried in that grave If He can roll the stone He can send the darkness runnin’ Might feel like Friday But your Sunday’s comin’ It might feel like Friday But your Sunday’s comin’“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NLT)
