Once we give our lives to Jesus and trust Him to save us from our sins, Jesus begins a lifelong work in us through His Holy Spirit, of making us more like Him. This process is called sanctification. The Holy Spirit works in us to change our desires, attitudes, speech, actions so that the way we live is more aligned with the character of Jesus and obedience to His commands.
Understanding this truth is significant in itself. But, with “More Like Jesus,” One Voice Worship models a significant step of spiritual maturity to proactively pray and ask God to do more of this sanctifying work in our lives, and gives us language through the lyrics to pray this kind of prayer to God. As Jesus sanctifies us, it won’t be easy all the time. Sometimes He’ll ask us to surrender things we might not want to lay down or change things that have been familiar patterns in our lives. Sometimes He might ask us to step out in faith and do things outside of our comfort zone. Whatever the sanctification process might look like for each of us, we don’t become more like Jesus in our own strength. It requires our participation and cooperation but Jesus empowers through His Spirit us to grow and change. Knowing this, you can pray along confidently with One Voice Worship today, “Holy Spirit, make me more like Jesus.”
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires…But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
