“Praise You Anywhere” isn’t only a fun praise song to sing at the top of your lungs; it has a powerful message too. This song shows us that God isn’t only worthy of our praise when things are going well in our lives. God is worthy of our praise anytime, anywhere, in any season. In this song, Brandon Lake sings about praising God in the fire, in the valley, in the lion’s den, in the prison. He uses this imagery, pulled from actual biblical stories, to describe praising God in trials and challenging situations.
You and I are not the first ones to learn how to give God praise even when life is hard. So many characters in Scripture did the same thing. I think of King David and other psalm writers who praised God while being pursued by enemies, facing grief and anxiety, struggling with their faith, or desperately waiting on answers to prayer. I also think of the story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16. They were arrested for preaching the gospel of Jesus and for disrupting the city’s business by freeing a girl from an evil spirit that allowed her to tell fortunes. While they were in prison, the Bible says they were praying and singing hymns to God. Talk about praising God anywhere.
Paul and Silas understood that God didn’t stop being deserving of their praise just because they were going through a trial. They understood the value of honoring God’s name in every circumstance because of who He is, first and foremost, and secondly because praising God reminds us of who He is and strengthens our faith. As they sang, the other prisoners heard Paul and Silas’ worship, God sent an earthquake to unlock the chains of Paul and Silas and all the other prisoners, and Paul and Silas got to share the gospel with one of the jailers after he witnessed this miracle God performed on their behalf.
Praising God in any season or circumstance is not only an offering to God and a reminder to your own heart. It can be a witness to other people around you who need to know Jesus too. Don’t underestimate the power of praise.
“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.” (Acts 16:25)
Sometimes you’ve gotta praise in the prison
Cry out to heaven
Shout it ’til the doors swing wide
Sometimes you’ve gotta stand on your shackles
Brave in the battle
Worship with your hands held high
I’ll praise You anywhere
Praise, give Him praise, give Him praise
In the highest grace, give Him praise, give Him praise
In the highest, He is worthy
Yes, He is worthy of all of the praise
