It was a weekend to remember. We drove down to New York City to enjoy some time away. It would be a weekend filled with lots of fun, and of course great food.
Saturday was filled with so much sight-seeing, and at the end of the day we were looking forward to eating something delicious.
We fired up Yelp and found an Italian restaurant not too far from our hotel. We walked a couple of blocks and entered.
I knew that I was going to like this place. It had the right vibe and I love Italian food.
We sat down and the server was very friendly and handed us the menus. When I opened up the menu, I knew I was going to find something that I liked. She told us the specials and my family began to order.
All of a sudden, I saw something on the menu that I wasn’t sure I had read correctly so I asked the server about it. She began to describe how this menu item was made and it felt as if Shakespeare had written the words. I was in. Tonight, I would be eating a deep-fried pizza.
When all the food came out it did not disappoint. Every bite was spectacular. We were all sharing our dishes with one another. Even after we were done eating the main course, we decided to indulge in dessert: tiramisu and cappuccinos!
When it was all said and done and the bill was paid, I was angry. Angry that the meal was over.
Food has always been an issue for me. I have battled with my weight all my life.
For some, food has become an idol. It is one of the gods in the Temple of Pleasure. The other two are sex and entertainment.
These three gods are actually blessings given to us by God himself. They are things that God has put in our lives to enjoy.
The problem is when we put these things over God and give them the attention they don’t deserve.
If you are having an issue with food, and it is becoming a god to you, take the advice Paul gives us in 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NLT).
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
So be grateful for the blessings God has given you. Thank Him for all the delicious food you are eating and all the fun you are having with your family and friends. God wants you to enjoy life and to worship Him.
If you are struggling with one of these idols, I can pray for you. Hit me up at milton@ktsy.org.
